The internet can be such an interesting little sphere of people, complete with both pleasures and disappointments. One such disappointment struck today when TheJadedGamer shut down its site to any more future updates. I had served as a volunteer staff member and contributing editor on the site for several years, and I find it upsetting to have to see the site have to close its doors, even though I completely understand the reasons behind its closure. Joey, Owner and Editor-in-Chief for TJG, was a great and diligent guy to work with, and I wish him all the best in his future endeavors.
By now you may have noticed that this is the first time that I’ve updated the site in about five months. My time, or lack thereof, had gotten the best of me; and during my winter and spring breaks, I found myself fighting off a severe case of writer’s block.
Right now, I’d like to give a shout out to a fellow Stephen Films reader, Aron, who sent me a surprise e-mail a few weeks ago to tell me that he enjoyed exploring this website and its down-to-earth tone. Thinking that nobody actually visited this site (ever), I found that to be a great encouragement to inspire me to get this site back on its feet again like it was when it had first started.
I’d also like to thank all of the readers of this site, few as you may be right now, and I encourage you to read through the material that I have now and keep yourself posted for any updates which may be coming in the next several weeks.
I can't believe it has been so long since I've updated this website, with the exception of only a few capsule reviews below.
College life as a commuter at Rowan started a month ago, and I've been inundated with work ever since. I did get some work done on the second
draft of my short script, but it's nothing to get excited about yet. However, this Thursday should be the first time that I visit the
college's Cinema Workshop, which is an on-campus club that produces and allows the pitching of
short films. I'm very excited about visiting there and feeling my way through the process of script pitching, so that I can try to pitch my own scripts in
the near future. I was even told by one of the members of the workshop that they haven't had a good script pitched for a while, so they're starving for
some fresh ideas. Sweet.
In the meantime, I've also seen several films in the past couple of months, most which are old classics that are just waiting for me to write up
some capsule reviews, including: Casablanca (great), Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (loved it), Rope (underrated),
Out of the Past (decent), Double Indemnity (pretty good), and Psycho III (utter crap). I also saw Flightplan in theaters
the other day, and I'm in the midst of preparing a full-length review for it. By the way, some of these films I've seen in my Film History and
Appreciation II class, which is easily my best class this semester. I think we're supposed to be watching Shane today. I'm looking forward
to it.
I just returned from a week-long vacation in Greenville, South Carolina, while my sisters attended a little summer camp at
a university in the area. Greenville is a nice little town, but there isn't much to see there. The trip ended up turning
into a big shopping spree, one in which I ended up picking up three more DVDs to add to the collection; namely,
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (the original), The Wizard of Oz (which I should've bought a long
time ago), and The Greatest Show on Earth (not too bad of a bad movie, even if it is a half-hour too long).
I, unfortunately, did not see any new movies over the course of the trip; although, I did go to see Charlie and the
Chocolate Factory a second time. One viewing was just too much to take in. There are some films which I would like
to see, possibly this weekend (if at all before they come out on DVD), including The Island and
March of the Penguins.
Perhaps the best thing that I accomplished over the course of the trip was coming one scene away from finally
finishing the first draft to my first short script, Desoto Forest. I hope to have that finished sometime this week.
A funny thing happened to me on my walk through the mall the other day. I stopped by a Sam Goody and picked up
"The Best of Bud Abbott and Lou Costello, Vol. 2" after having a long financial discussion with myself.
Isn't that hilarious? It isn't?
Well, let's hope that these movies are funnier than I am. I watched one of the movies, In Society, two days ago,
and I was bored to death. Then, last night, I watched another one of the movies, Little Giant, which was
surprisingly sweet, even though it wasn't as outrageous and funny as a typical Abbott and Costello film.
Hopefully I'll get to watch more over this next week. Abbott and Costello films may not be the best artistic movies,
but the comical teamwork between the two is classic; and besides, you're not going to find a better deal than
eight films for $20.
Hey, have you had any questions about how I rate movies? Yeah, I didn't think so. But while you're here, you get to see
the new Never Asked Questions page, where you can find the answers to the two whole questions that you
never asked and probably had no intention of asking, but I get to bore you with more useless information, so it makes
all of the effort worth it. So come again. Tell a friend.
Welcome to StephenFilms.com, a new website that represents a years-worth of work. Or, let me rephrase that. It represents
a years-worth of paying for a domain name that I wasn't using, while also representing about one week of actual work.
Stephen Films is a website that I've had in the back of my mind for as long as I've had the stephenfilms.com registration
fee digging into my bank account, but it wasn't until now that I've actually done something about it. This is a the website
that gives me the oportunity to showcase my projects, talk about films, and rant about whatever is ticking me off at the
moment, all without having to throw together a cheap, sloppy personal site or post on a free Live Journal account,
which I discovered that I have no interest in keeping up to date with every stupid little thing that goes on in my life
(i.e. "Today, I went to work... again... but I was only two minutes late this time...").
Look out for a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory review within a week, and look out for... whatever else I feel like
posting up here on a whim. Thanks for visiting!
